    Am I a diabetic?

My doctor think i may be type 2 diabetic, but I'm confused with what he tells me and what i read. I check my blood sugar before brekkey and before teatime. The readings in the afternoon range from 3.6 - 6.5 with 3.6 making me shakey, but morning readings can be quite high 5.7 - 8.2 but mainly around 7.0. Last check of ac1 I think was 7.2. I read that high readings in the morning are normal, but the doctor disagree. I don't take any medicin other than Pariet and Lipitor. I too suspect lipitor to be guilty of reduced libido (I'm a male). any comments appreciated.

I think normal ranges are: fasting 4-6, and non fasting(2 hours after a meal 4-7.

It is true that overnight your liver manufactures sugar overnight in anticipation of an energy defeciency when you wake up. There is even a name for the process, but I have no idea what it is.

    Re: Am I a diabetic?

    I have type 2 diabetes.

According to my doctor the preferred reading should be between 5 & 6; 2 hours after a meal the reading should be between 6 & 8.

Because I'm pregnant I have to keep my readings  a little lower than normal- 5.5 fasting & 7 after a meal.

I'm on Diabex tablets (2x500mg slow release)- the main ingredient being metformin.

Your doctor should give you a form to sign up for Diabetes Australia & a referral to a dietician for a little more help.

There are other cholesterol drugs than lipitor.

Logically if you stopped taking it and the problem disappears it is a good indicator of what is involved in the problem.

Diabetes is a serious condition that needs good management.

Weight loss will not make any of these problems worse.
