    Exercises for shapely legs

    Hi All,

I have been inspired to get my act together to exercise and be more considerate of my diet. I am about 168cm and weigh about 66kgs (I don't have scales). Overall I'd like to lose around 10kgs and generally tone up and be strong and fit. I have just started going to the gym 3-4 times a week. I do pilates, spin and power (aka pump at other gyms) classes at the gym and am going to start yoga; I don't work out on my own at the gym.

A particular focus for me at the moment are my legs, which are proportionally quite large and shapeless. Are there specific exercises I can do for shapely legs? Also will spin classes give me muscley legs? I want lean, shapely legs, not big muscely legs.

I was also thinking of speaking to a nutritionist for diet advice. Or should I be able to manage this on my own?

    Thanks.

    Amber.

    Re: Exercises for shapely legs

What is shapely and attractive is a personal thing and perhaps your motivation for wanting a certain body type needs to be considered.

Most people have legs that go all the way to the ground and if they give trouble free service of transportation this is a good start.

Long endurance type exercise will produce a leaner more slender look.

Shorter strength type exercises will give a stockier and more muscularly appearance.

What YOU want is up to YOU.

    Re: Exercises for shapely legs

    hi amber, welcome to FOH.

by all means, it can't hurt to speak to a nutritionist - even if you are doing pretty well, it's nice to know where you can tighten up a few things or add in some more variety.

pilates and yoga are brilliant as they are stretching types of exercises - and stretching as you know by how it feels, elongates the muscles as you're doing them. by increasing that flexibility and strength, you'll be able to begin working on how you want them to be.

i don't know if there's a specialised way of doing it, but i guess doing the above is one way.
cardio - walking or running - is another way to work on reducing fat within the muscle mass.
one thing that i do that kills my legs, but is nice and i feel gives me leaner legs is to put some ankle weights (those velcro on things) on and then do some floorwork. this is kind of old school, but one thing i don't have is horrid legs - frightening belly LOL but nice legs. i've done those floor leg lifts (and also standing leg lifts) for years. sort of a throwback to when i used to do ballet i guess (as a kid)... things like squats and lunges will work on the different muscle groups within your legs, as will doing leg presses and that kind of thing. it just depends on what you're comfortable with.

when you say they are "quite large & shapeless" what do you mean? are they fat and flobby large & shapeless, or just non-toned.

i doubt that spin classes will give you bigger legs, but you will likely build up great muscle strength and a bit more tone through your calves which probably won't be a bad thing!

    hope this helps somewhat!

    Re: Exercises for shapely legs

I'd definitely recommend spin classes and any cycling to improve your leg and bum shape. Bikes are great cardio work using the bigger muscles groups - you won't turn into an Olympic bike rider from a few spin classes - just trust me!  And it's great for your backside too.

Other leg shapers are: aerobics classes like Tummy Hips and Thighs classes and Pump, in the gym do calf raises and abductor machine, others activities include hiking, rock-climbing and skipping.

    Re: Exercises for shapely legs

Thank you all for the advice. I’ll definitely keep up the Spin and Pilates classes.

Petanque Don, my motivation for improving my body shape is my wedding next year! So while I do not take for granted the fact that my legs do their job perfectly well, I have greater ambition for them.

Kaz, by 'shapeless' I mean thick, solid thighs. I'm lacking muscle definition in my thighs- my calves are ok. I’d like dancers legs, like you! Smile

Silly me I thought many wedding dresses are long but if you have got it be comfortable with it.

Just from the original post it sounded like you were keen to please others.
