Re: WHY DO GEESE FLY IN A V FORMATION?? - THANKS FOR LETTING ME JOIN YOUR FLOCK

As each bird flaps its wings, it creates ‘uplift’ for the bird following.  By flying in a V formation the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if the bird flew alone.

LESSON: When people share a common direction and sense of community they can reach their goals more easily because they are travelling on the thrust of one another.

Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to fly alone, and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the ‘lifting power’ of the bird immediately in front.

LESSON: If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those who are headed where we want to go and be willing to accept their help as well as give ours to others.

When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies at the point position.

LESSON:  It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks, and sharing leadership.  With other people, as with geese, we are interdependent on each other.

The geese in formation honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

LESSON: We need to make sure our honking from behind is encouraging and not something else.

I have seen this powerpoint/ slide show

as if it is not the most fascinating thing around (well im sure there are more fascinating things haha)

the whole slide show goes on to tell how the geese stick together and are there for each other, if one is weak it is escorted to the ground etc

and there is a heap of amazing things they do to get the most out of their group

i think the humor behind it is

see what you can achieve when the right goose is leading you haha

Its funny... they always say things like 'dont let the turkeys get you down' and 'how can you fly like an eagle when your surrounded by turkeys'.

Sounds like in the bird world its pretty good to be a goose but if you're born a turkey ... your stuffed hahahahaha

The aerodynamics of the phenomenon is well documented.

In cycling groups usually ride in a peleton to improve the aerodynamics.

While it seems sensible that the riders following get an advantage what is less obvious is that the leading rider also gets a small advantage.

Cooperative effort can often achieve a lot more than lots of individuals

I love it. Lets you know you should have a good support group who are all like minded, in similar positions and heading in the right direction.

    Thanks jomarti
