    Water Loading?

How does everyone feel about it? I was really pissed with Neil last night! I would have voted him out in a shot. Possibly not the best tactically, but I would not want someone like that there!!! Do you think the other guy who gained water loaded to a lesser degree?

    Re: Water Loading?

It's not a very positive tactic is it?

I think a lot more people must of known in advance because you wouldn't go and do that if you thought there was a chance you would be eliminated

    Re: Water Loading?

Clearly there are some silly people on the show fancy thinking that with 12 cards drawn that you can win with a 9 ????

If you are going to bluff you never call.

I think the issue of water loading needs to be dealt with it doesn’t seem to be within the spirit of the contest.

There seems more politics in this show than any Australian political party

If he did water load to the order of 17 pounds he should be able to get a good loss this week.

If one constant can throw the weigh in to get rid of another the whole concept of the show seems flawed.

But I suppose it really only is a circus for light entertainment.

At least in a soap opera the actors are better trained and better groomed.

Like grease spot spreading on paper so is the indifference of C grade TV

I must be a big loser to waste my time on such rubbish.

    Re: Water Loading?

Mmmm...I'd accidentally tripped over this information when looking something up a couple of weeks ago, and kept it to myself so as not to spoil it for others.  As you all know, when there's a waterloaded gain, there's a massive loss the next week, so stay tuned.

I think the only choice is to limit gains to nothing more than say 2 pounds or one kilo to maintain some integrity in the 'rules' and efforts of good sportmanship.  The US series hadn't seen a big waterloading attempt (well, not that indiscreet anyway) in the past.  So hope they change the 'rules' accordingly.  There was a kick-up in the US about it too.

    Re: Water Loading?

Everyone goes on about water loading but for mine I think it's a bit of a crock.  I mean before a normal weigh in they work hard to strip every bit of water from their body to reduce their overall weight and if they have immunity (or whatever) they aren't as concerned with the figure so they don't.  The end result of course is a big weight gain over the previous week because they haven't punished their bodies to strip water.

Of course there are some bad seeds who don't play to the "spirit" of the game and intentionally add extra water but if you legislate against it you will end up catching some people who just haven't stripped for the weigh in.  Of course the producers of the show could beat the cheaters by taking several weight measurements over a few hours.  Who can hold in five litres of water for three hours?  It's not like what we see on tele is a real set of scales.

    Re: Water Loading?

True, the scales are simply a stage and they're weighed at some early point in the day, though their reaction to the figures are genuine so this must be withheld until 'showtime' from them.  The whole point of water loading is to have the WHOPPING weight loss the following week and thereby securing either a win for your team and/or immunity from elimination.  Although Neil intentionally made his trio lose so they would face elimination and the choosers were stacked against sending Neil home so definitely a Black team member would be going - a bit of a gamble and a bit too many moves of the chessboard if you ask me.  But it pays off for him.

Like the trainers, I wish the 'game' part wasn't really there.

Interesting what you say about weighing over a span of time as hard to retain that much fluid, and then take a median.  But I think it's easier to put a limit on gaining such as 2lbs or 1kg, as few people are going to accidentally gain more than that in this show under those conditions.

    Re: Water Loading?

And they consume high sodium levels so as too retain extra fluid that way, also. Great.

    Re: Water Loading?

They certainly do waterload. There was an instance of it years ago in an earlier episode and the producers vowed to "outlaw" it. Guess they haven't because Big Wal did it in the Aussie version and now someone has done it again. It's easy to do.

Were carbs go water follows. Were sodium goes water also follows.

Remember that 1 litre of water = 1 kilogram.

Lets say that 2 days out from weigh in old mate eats a big plate of spaghetti with lots of salt. During the meal and in the hours after he drinks 3 litres of water. He may retain as much as 3 kg from that. (The weight is held in muscle as glycogen by the way, not in the bladder like some folks think - they do still wee).

One day out he does it again - another 3 kilos.

Morning of the weigh in does it again - another 3 kilos. Allowing for water loss in vital bodily functions, the contestant may have gained 9 or 10 kg in "water weight" - not true fat weight. Then next week he'll show a HUGE loss compared to last week.

I think it is cheating - others might call it strategy....?

    Re: Water Loading?

In agreeance with the cheating theory.

BUT you have explained quite clearly why I ALWAYS gain weight (temporarily) after a big pasta meal!
