    MICHELLE BRIDGES TALK

    Hi all,

Thought I'd share a talk that Michelle (BL Red Trainer) gave on Saturday at my gym (Fernwood Rosebery).

Her grand entrance was when my PT Cristina carried her in on her back to the stage.  No, its not cuz she's lazy but rather she was trying to prove a point.  Damien who lost 75kg, lost her and the weights she had in her hand.  She was not shy in saying she was 60kg and asked Cristina how it felt to carry her in for that brief moment.  She replied that Michelle was heavy and that she couldn't carry that around for too long. Imagine yourself, carrying around the excess weight, how much problems can be allievated, joint problems, no strength and other health problems associated with the weight.

Anyway, some key points she raised were ...

    • Get Real
    • Get Moving
    • Get Eating Well

    GET REAL:

She said to get real about where you are currently.  Try and identify why you have come to this point in your life - childhood issues, whatever.  Then realise that to move forward, you WILL need to make changes otherwise you will be stuck in the past.

    Payoffs/cons -

She asked the question:  What is the payoff for being overweight?  In otherwords, answers like, well you can eat anything you like whenever you like etc....

Then asked: Well what is the con of being overweight? Is it stopping you from aspiring to your dreams, being unhealthy/unfit, being overweight and other issues like in Munalitta's case - not being able to have a baby ....

    GET MOVING:

She said you can lose weight without moving, but that's not good enough.  You need to work the body.  She said most people all they want to do is hit the cardio machines.  Thats all well, but what about working the muscles.  Weight training is the most effective in helping to burn more calories and she also added that weight training is the best at the fountain of youth, keeping you young.

She also suggested that if your not familar with the weights, get a PT for a couple of sessions and be a "sponge".  Get them to workout a program and take in and ask as many questions as you can.  Get the most out of the time and then she said a good PT is one that can educate there clients, whereby they can create there own programs later on and push themselves.

    GET EATING WELL:

She educated all the BL on this ....

EAT LIKE A PRINCE/KING FOR BREAKFAST

EAT LIKE A PRINCESS FOR LUNCH

EAT LIKE A PAUPER FOR DINNER

In otherwords have a big breakfast, then reduce the amount for lunch and so on till dinner.  Didn't get a chance to ask her for a sample plan, but perhaps some of you may come up with something.  She said all too often we eat our largest meal at dinner time and then go to bed.  We are no longer active and that's no good.

She also stressed how important breakfast is.  Many people (including me for so many years) don't have breakfast.  But this is your fuel to start your day.  Many will skip breakfast and lunch and then have the "hand in mouth disease".   So when they come home they will grab everything in sight cuz there so hungry.  By having regular meals, you will help to speed up your metabolism.

Well that's all folks.  Hope you get some stuff out of it.

    Jen

She is quite correct and you'll find this info in most textbooks. The more weights you do, the more muscle you you'll build, and therefore the higher you're BMR will be.

    BUT

In reality, if people don't start seeing results within a few weeks they're just not going to stick with it so I advise concentrating on cardio with a couple of sessions of weights per week. Or even doing interval sessions between the cardio and weights (within the same sessions). You can bring in the weights a bit more when they've made training a regular part of each day.

There's also the theory that doing weights enables the person to burn more calories post-workout because the muscles must repair, but the same thing has been found from doing high-intensity interval sessions.
