    Chris is not Anorexic!

It's quite insensitive to throw that accusation around based on how he looks (rather than his behaviour) when so many people are battling this disease at the moment. Chris has worked hard to go from 150kg, down to his bottom weight of 79.4kg. Even at that weight he was still within the healthy range for his height but as the show is finished, he's already weighing 85kg which gives him a BMI of 22. He plans on sitting around 95kg-100kg.

Here I'll answer a few of the main points I've seen on other forums:

Too Skinny: As I've just mentioned he's well inside the healthy range for his height. It stands out a little more for him because he is so tall (6'5") and therefore has long limbs. People were even saying he looked anorexic when he was 100kg! His face would've added to this 'too skinny' look because the contestants dehydrate before each weigh in.

No Strength: This is based on Bob's statement during 1 episode when Chris was struggling with 7kg dumbells. What Bob didn't mention was that Chris had been training for 2 hours before that bit was filmed. Chris has not done much weight training before so no matter how much lifting he did in the house he was never going to come out strong. He currently bench presses ~50kg, which isn't what I'd class as week.

Not Eating Enough: He went through a stage in the house where he was dropping his calories and from that point on everything bad that happened to him was blamed on this. When he left the house he was eating 1100-1600 calories per day.

Since Chris left the house he has had weekly medical checks, diet analysis, blood tests, and psychological evaluations. It would be highly unlikely that he would be able to pass all those tests if he was unhealthy in any way.

Totally agree with your comments Ray and im surprised people wouldnt realise that the end weight for chris was simply to win not his goal weight, as you say he is TALL so would look thin, looking forward to seeing chris with abit more weight on him through muscle at 100kg he will be a solid boy

    Re: Chris is not Anorexic!

I will also suggest that people have become so conditioned to seeing fat people that they have forgotten what someone who is in the healthy weight range looks like.

Certainly in Chris’s case there was a dramatic change from before and after.

Being in the public eye you will always get more than your fair share of scrutiny.

Remember journalists are paid to write material that will sell the publication they appear in truth and accuracy is only important when it will help sell the publication.

Being a celebrity can have disadvantages at times.

    Re: Chris is not Anorexic!

I agree Ray, he's not Anorexic.

On being too thin, his BMI on the night of the comp was 20.

His current BMI may be 22, but it was 20 on the night.

Now I've thought about this after your post, is this something we have to do (get low) in order to shred body fat, because we will lose some muscle mass when losing weight??????

    Re: Chris is not Anorexic!

    Hi Dave,

Do you mean low calories? Everyone is different but Chris was getting good results on his diet so I didn't change it. There's a lot of factors that will determine how much muscle mass you will lose. You'll usually lose some when restricting calories, unless you're completing a good weights program at the same time (the old "Use it, or lose it" thing!).

    Re: Chris is not Anorexic!

Just stating the obvious here but Anorexia and BMI are completely unrelated. There are lot's of people out there who have a BMI under 18.5 and eat like a horse. I presume that you could also have a BMI of 30 and be anorexic at the same time. I guess the correlation is that if you are anorexic your BMI will drop into the underweight range over time.

It's an old world out there and I'm glad I was part of it!

    Re: Chris is not Anorexic!

I popped into the Biggest Loser sight to see if they have posted any updates on the contestants to see how they are going now that the game is over. All I can say is that I am disappointed with the attitudes the viewing public have taken on all the contestants; especially the nastiness that is being written about Chris. I cannot believe some of the things people are writing. The posters on the Biggest Loser forum have ditched any common sense and intelligence and have gobbled up what the producers portrayed each player to be. The naivety of these people, comparing Chris to the other contestants. Everyone has different body structures and just by looking at someone you can't state that they are anorexic and as one of my mates commented some of the contestants still have a some way to go to being 'healthy' and there has been no mention of that. I think Chris did an excellent job, and congratulations Ray - if I lived in NSW I would be tracking you down to be my PT. Training 2 winners just goes to show you know what you're talking about and you get results.

I meant low in body weight. Like low in BMI.

    Re: Chris is not Anorexic!

Yes, as your body weight gets lower there is more of a chance of losing some muscle mass. Everyone must remember, you don't just instantly fall apart as soon as your BMI drops below 20. We were constantly measuring Chris' health, and that was used as a guide to how much weight he was allowed to lose. It wasn't just a point of dropping as much as he could because i actually held him back for the last week so he didn't lose any more.

On the point about Chris' BMI being 20 on the night, it's not a true indication because he was dehydrated (as they all do), which is why I say his BMI was 22. The classification for being underweight is usually set at a BMI of 18, which means Chris would have been below 71kg. Now he could have had a BMI of 25 and still been unhealthy (or as mentioned by AK, could have had an eating disorder) which is why we kept a good eye on him.

    Re: Chris is not Anorexic!

hmm and quote from their website....

Chris Garling, Winner of the Biggest Loser 2007

""This is what I use to keep the weight off"

"After I left the show I put on 30kg because I could no longer train 7 hours a day like I did in the house. Then I started Bodytrim and lost 20kg in just 12 weeks with no strenuous exercise."

    Re: Chris is not Anorexic!

Isn't it easier to lose weight if it hasn't been on for very long?  I know he was big before but if the weight was gain quickly since the show, wouldn't it be easier to lose anyway??
