Exercise program for a stay at home mum with 2 active toddlers?

Hi I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice.

I have put on alot of weight over the past few years due to an underactive thyroid and we have now in the last few months got my thyroxine levels undercontrol. I also have a bad left knee, I dislocated it last year, and still causes me alot of pain on and off.

I really want to loose the weight and have for the past 6 months or so been changing my eating to much more healthy eating and thats going great.

Since March I have lost 10 kgs when I last got weight at the doctors 3 weeks ago.

My problem is fitting excercise in, I have 2 older kids at school and 2 very active toddlers who will be 3 in september and 4 in august who I have 24/7, my hubby works long hours and is away alot with work, so I have them all the time and neither of them have nap time anymore. We cant afford to join a gym right now so I have been trying to figure out what to do.

I wanted to go walking 3 times intitially with the younger too during the day, youngest in pram and older one walking, but she gets very tired and I also have concerns with keeping them out in the cold when its really cold, so this hasnt been going well.

I have just started doing aerobics auz style, i did 20 mins yesterday and today and had to stop a few times to tend to the kids and I also did step ups outside while the kids were playing, I did 100 sets each leg up and down both yesterday and today.

Does anyone have any ideas on what else I can do at home to increase my exercise??

    Thanks in advance

10 Kg in 3-4 months is a great effort and perhaps you just need more of the same?

While their father may not be home on a regular basis there comes a time when he needs some chance to be a parent even if it may be something he is not used to.

Think of it as training if you had some sort of other emergency that you had to deal with.

While he may find it a challenge at first unless he gets the chance to practice his parenting skills he will never improve.

    How bad is the knee?

Maybe try kicking/passing a ball with the kids. They'll probably like the run around too (and it might bring back the daily snoozes!)

    Thanks for the replys.

I went back to the docs on Thursday and I have lost another 3kgs, so so far its 13 kgs another 7kgs to get to my first goal

Yeah I thought that was a failry good weightloss, altho its hard to know how much of that is due to getting thyroxine levels under control and how much is from my efforts.

Unfortunatly hubby isnt all that supportive when it comes to weightloss and says I dont need to loose weight etc when I really do, so it makes that a bit hard, am working on that tho.

Re the Knee, since then activities like squats are very painfull, it also gets quite stiff and sometimes difficult to straighten also I cant put much weight on it when kneeling, when I had physio for it the physio said not to put any weight on it when kneeling. When I am doing the stepping onto a low step by the end its starting to get painful, so I think that I am doing the right number at the moment, hopefullY i can gradually increase the number of reps.

Thanks for that tip ray, yeah I do that with them every few days. Along with rushing around after them when they play and at parks etc

Hubbys now away for 5 weeks and at this point he is unsure if he will be home for the weekends so I had a chat with the older 2 and they have agreed that we can go for a walk everyday after school and everyday during the holidays, so thats good.

    congratulations...

now that you are nearing your goal of 20kg (i think that's what it is?!!) it's a good time to start thinking about what you will be doing for the rest of your life to maintain that loss! sounds scary - right?! well... the thing is to remember what exactly you are doing now - eating better, keeping track of your food, not giving in to binges and exercising - having FUN exercising as you play with your kids and all that kind of thing.

give yourself some kind of "panic button" for when you reach your goal - it might be if your jeans feel tight or you know you've had several poor food choices in a row - something that will help you identify when you might be headed back into enemy territory! and then have a PLAN on how to deal with it. will you make sure you walk every day from now til the end of time? what food changes have you made? what ways have you changed your cooking? your eating? is it slower - savouring the food? only at the table, on a plate?

having a plan for when you GET THERE is the most important thing of all!

good luck!! and well done x

Thanks again for the advice cowgirl, its only my first goal tho, my aim was to loose my first 20kgs in 6 months, and if I keep going the way I will have done that in less than 5 months, still have a lot more to loose.
