    Health Insurance

Any recommendations on a good provider? or bad experiences with one that you may care to share?

    hiya matey,

well it really comes down to what you want to be covered for - if it's just hospital, you need to compare things like the actual cover- what it entitles you to; whether you have to pay the gap or other out of pocket expenses. then you go for things like extras - whether it be dental, optical, and so on.

we have insurance thru NIB, which are pretty good - we have a corporate cover (hubby works for an american co) so we get a huge amount back on a lot of our claims- ie hospital visits usually end up with no out of pocket (except say anaethetists bills); most of our dentist visits end up with nothing out of pocket, or maybe $30.

we've also been covered in the past with Australian Unity, and they were pretty good too. If you're going to use things like Physio & Massage/Chiropractic a lot, then find out how much you are allowed to claim before you run out of the cover (ie you might be allowed to claim $1500 for chiro/physio for the year)...

shop about, and definitely compare what you are getting for your money. health insurance was NOT created equal!! Wink

Definantly shop around, you dont wnat to be paying for things you will never use...

Some companys will actually cover gym membership or wellbeing programs such as weight watchers which is cool.

Im with mutual community but am thinking of updating my cover to something higher as i am on single saver.

    Re: Health Insurance

The economics of health insurance is interesting.

With the state of Australia’s heath system if you have a life threatening illness you will get treatment.

However if you have a non life threatening illness you will wait and probably a very long time.

I will suggest that the choice issue that many private health insurance provides talk about is open to interpretation.

Most people who see a specialist go to the specialist they are referred to.

Information about the quality of care or success rates for various doctors in not available to most patients some would argue that the nature of medicine makes it impossible to collate such information.

If you don’t live in a major town there may be very few specialists servicing the area.

For instance there probably are not many gynaecologists in Broken Hill

Any insurance is a form of risk management how likely you are to get sick depends on many things.

Also like all forms of insurance the cost of administering/advertising the fund will be money that will never be paid out to the members.

How risk adverse you are is a personal thing.

Personally I have basic health cover with mutual community I am happy with the service I have received.

    Re: Health Insurance

I only had a $500.00 excess to pay for my lap band. ( the same as any stay in hospital)

The practice I go to charges a $700.00 fee for exercise classes afterwards
