Fab at 40 - not fat at 40!
Well, this is it. 40 is looming fast and I am still in shock from seeing myself in the photos from my brothers wedding last weekend - I knew I was big, bigger than I've ever been before, but I hardly recognised myself. Shocking. This forum will be my tool to vent and make my weight loss REAL. If it is out there in the public domain (even if nobody else ever looks at this), then I feel accountable. I just hope it doesn't go the way of WW, JC, CSIRO etc etc etc, all with good starts then 'somehow' being abandoned. A bit about me, I'm 39 and have 2 girls, 2 and 3 yrs, who keep me busy and as all parents will know, make finding time to excercis hard. I live in rural NSW, work part time and am doing my Masters degree at Uni. I have absolutely no will power and love food! I'm not sure what my weight is now, about 95km, I'm 166 cm tall. So, roll on tomorrow, I'm going to try and make this work!

Hi Fab! Welcome to the forum!! Congrats on taking a step with your weight loss, so many of us have tried all the "plans" and not gotten anywhere, so we understand! Sounds like you have it very busy, so best of luck fitting in the exercise! Cheers! Jane (39, with 3 kids aged 10,8 and 6. Similar stats to you, I am 171 cm and about 100kgish!)

Welcome Libby. All the best for your weight loss efforts. I, too, have a similar story to you. I'm 39 with three boys (7, 2 1/2, and 3 months) weigh about 100-ish and 165cms. Good luck :)

I can't say the first day was great. I had forgotten when i joined up (somehow) that it was my first day at a new job the next day. So instead of getting out of bed, having a good breakfast and hitting the treadmill, I had to get up very early, charge around the house clutching a bit of vegemite toast and a coffee, while feeding and dressing the kids before jumping into the car (20 minutes behind schedule), driving 45km, dropping them at a new daycare centre (tears...) then jumping back into the car and driving another 50km to the town where I work. Phew...exhasuted already... Food for the day included about 10 cups of coffee, cake (the 'welcome morning tea' food choices where cake or cake, so i had cake..) and a fat soaked lunch including chips, crumbed chicken, a creamy sauce, cheese... Evil stuff. But, one thing i am not going to do is get too obsessive about food. I know that I can't eat like that everyday, but will not go completety without it either, that's the quickest way for me to fail. Like all of us here, i know what to do, I've just got to bloody do it!!!!!!! Today has started better. I weighed myself and was surprsied - 'only' 89.5kg. I was pleased with that, but do think maybe the scales took pity on me and where trying to ease me back into it all again after all this time away from them....The girls are watching Playschool in a minute, so I'm hoping that gives me some time for the treadmill, usually i can't use it while they are awake, as they think it is the best toy ever! I wonder if I will look back at these early posts and be appauled at the excuses i made not to exercise or eat well?? Only time will tell. Now its off to the treadmill.

Re: first day- treadmill update
I managed a whole 52 seconds on the treadmill before the 2 yr old was in the room and got to do a gut busting 1 minute 26 seconds before they were both there. Looks like the Playschool Diet (where you work out twice a day while Playschool is on) is not working for me! LOL. But, despite that I managed to do 20 minutes and only had to leap off once to save a small child from death by stapler. I will jump on again during Playschool this afternoon. I'm using Dr Tims Success meal replacements. I started them earlier in the year and was pleased with how it went, so I've just been down to the Chemist to restock. Roll on afternoon Playschool! All the best to everyone else! Looking forward to updates.

Re: first day- treadmill update
I hear your frustration at trying to exercise with small ones in the house. I have a treadmill and bike in the house, and I actually like using them but find it difficult to exercise because I feel that I can't leave them half-supervised (2y8m and 3m). Using the tready seems to wake up the baby. I've been able to get out about twice a week with the jogger and toddler seat and that's worked quite well.

Re: first day- treadmill update
Yes, I worry about the supervision, I don't dare close the door, but then of course they can hear me and run straight down the hall to me on the treadie. I think I am just going to have to keep using the treadie while they are in the room and nicely 'roar' at them until they get bored with it as a possible toy and give up and go play with their own toys. I should try the jogger and toddler seat - we have recently moved to a new town, where it is hilly, freezzing and lacks footpaths, so its not a super appealing idea - but, they are all just excuses not to exercise arent they! In our last town there was a wonderful walking track that was flat and safe from cars. We went there nearly daily and the kids could ride in the pram, run free or ride their little bikes safely, I miss that waking track! And i was right about my scales easing me back into weigh ins - today they have snuck me up a 1/2 kilo to 90. Sneaky little machine.

Re: first day- treadmill update
Hello! Do you have access to any good exercise DVD's? I found them a saviour when my littles were underfoot! Although eventually mine also learnt that Mummy, red faced and screeching at them to "GET AWAY!", was serious!

Ha! This made me laugh! 'Screehing" is the word I use to describe myself but didn't want to use it here: obviously I'm not quite at home enough here yet to be completely honest, but screeching is the word that best describes me and the kids most of the time. I wont shy away from it again. I will try a DVD, at least that way the kids can muck about next to me and i might get something accomplished. Took the pram & kids out today for a long walk and it really went well, so I will try to do that more often.

Hey Fab, DVD sounds good. You could also possibly take them out to a park and chase them around :) but only on sunny days of course (if there are any!) Keep persevering, you'll find what works for you Ray

Hi Ray. Well, I tried the DVD (piliates) and I wish I had taped the experience! My 3 yr old got her own mat and tried really hard, she was adorable! And so excited about it, wanted to do another lesson later in the day. The 2 yr old did some gorgeous laying on her back waving her legs around like the instructor, but the majority of the time body slamming mummy. This is a technique my girls picked up from their older boy cousins and is taken straight out of a World Wrestling game...In my house if you lie on the ground you are sure game for a body slam, often involving both kids. I am sure you can imagine what it is like. But, I thought this may have actually added to the physicality of my workout LOL. I will keep it up, it will get easier.

I'm off on holidays for 3 weeks. I'm not even going to try and pretend that this is a good weight loss oppurtunity. I am simply going to enjoy myself, eat as well as i want to, move as much as I can and get stuck back in when I get back home. all the best everyone, see you all in a few weeks! Libby
