Is it safe to consume poultry products?

I loved eating poultry products but since the time I have read the breaking bird flu news on http://www.drugdelivery.ca/bird-flu.aspx, I have developed disgust for chicken and other poultry products. Does someone feel like this too? Is it safe to consume poultry products nowadays?

Bird flu cannot be carried through food, so its safe to eat.

I don't think I've ever heard of  reported case here- seems to be one of those things Australia has managed to avoid.

Australian Quarantine are so strict in the foods that you can bring in, and with the bird flu, all poultry would have been inspected in a quarantine approved premise to ensure that it is safe to enter into the country.  A permit would probably apply to allow the importation of the goods prior to them leaving oversea's or there could be a total ban on the product - depending on how it was imported ie: raw or canned. Quarantine do not want an outbreak of this disease as it would affect our farmers and our local industry.  But its all up to the individual, I eat chicken all the time as I don't eat red meat.

I would agree with JDC I would think there are no special health issues with eating chicken however raw chicken has a high risk of salmonella.

If you choose to have a restricted diet the what and why you choose not to eat something is a personal choice.

Personally the raw fish and offal are things I have no desire to eat.

All chicken meat sold in Australia is produced in Australia. Imports of chicken meat are banned for biosecurity reasons (eg. to keep diseases such as bird flu out of Australia).

Personally I think most Australian food products are of good quality and we have some of the highest quality standards of anywhere in the world. I'm happy to eat chicken in Australia, although I choose to eat free range chicken for animal ethics reasons (plus it tastes much better!).
