    fat burning

my name is valmai, and I want to know why do we deduct the calories we burn on our exercise bike from the calories we eat each day, I try to keep my calories at 1000 per day, and if I burn off 300 then seems to me I am not getting enough to eat, and I am not losing very much weight, I am using the calorieking reference book.

    Re: fat burning

it's important to know a couple of numbers -

    your height/weight/age
    your BMI
your BMR - basal metabolic rate.

your body uses around say 1700 calories a day just to function - to breathe, sleep, maintain, to repair, for organs to just go on beating and working and cleansing and all they do. (that's what your BMR is - the amount of energy your body uses without taking into account the calories you put into it (food) or take out of it (exercise/daily function ie walking & housework)...

depending on the numbers above, we can help give you a better idea of how many calories you need. if anything, i'd suggest you are probably not eating enough (with 1000 calories, unless you are doing a medically assisted liquid diet or similar) in order for your body to have the fuel it requires to function and lose weight.

if you can get the above details, that will be really great and we can help you a bit more.

you can google to check what those numbers are for you - and i am pretty sure ray has the BMI & BMR calculators also on this site.

It seems I should be eating 1556+ calories, is this correct or am I reading it wrong.and if correct should I be exercising more, I am 70yrs old and have had 1 heart attack, also had my hip replaced in Oct last year, not to do  strenuous stuff for 12 mths,

I am not very good at using these web sites, dont know how to get  into sites , and how to make a journal is beyond me, I just bumble along if I access anything it is just luck,

    Re: fat burning

    Hi Valmai,

Your BMR represents how many calories you should consume each day in order to maintain your current weight. If the figure you stated above is correct, then you should be consuming 1481 calories per day. If you are consuming 1000 calories per day, then you will have a caloric deficit of 481 calories per day, or 3367 per week (which is almost half a Kg in weight loss). Now if you're burning 300 calories per day in exercise, then that's another 2100 calories per week that you're burning, which brings your grand total to 5467 calories per week.

1000 calories does seem a bit low but some people are fine with that amount of calories. If you are regular feeling hungry, or if your weight loss has slowed, try increasing your calories to 1200 and see how you feel.
