Childhood Obesity: Be The Person You Want Your Child To Be!

Unfortunately, childhood obesity is an increasing problem throughout the world.  It has been estimated that as many as 22 million children under age 5 around the globe are overweight or obese.  Sadly, one in four American children is now overweight.  Children who are overweight are more likely to suffer from pediatric hypertension, type II diabetes, are at greater risk of heart disease, and may suffer from joint problems.  Therefore, childhood obesity is a major worldwide health problem that needs to be addressed quickly, for an entire generation is at risk.

A Leading Cause of Death

Believe it or not, obesity is now the leading cause of death in the U.S.  That means that it has overtaken smoking as the nation’s number-one health problem.  The cost of obesity is staggering—some $118 billion each year.  As a result, government officials are left searching for answers.

Major Causes of Childhood Obesity

While childhood obesity may stem from a variety of factors, the two leading causes are lack of exercise and poor diet.  Many children spend hours in front of the television and the computer; therefore, their lives are mostly sedentary.  Because their schools might have also cut out physical education programs, these children are not burning off enough calories.   By engaging in 30 minutes of exercise a day, children can reduce their risk of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.  They can also build up their muscles, bones, and joints and improve their mental outlook.

Because many families today experience a time crunch, fast food is often the order of the day.  This is unfortunate, since fast food is loaded with fat and calories.  In addition, a number of children are indulging in high-calorie sodas which offer little in the way of nutritional value.  Through simple changes in diet, children can reduce their risk for heart problems, strengthen their immune systems, enhance their metabolisms, and increase their energy levels.   Children should be fed a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.  Potato chips and cookies should be used only sparingly.

Importance of Role Models

It is highly important that children have effective role models.  Be sure to engage in exercise each day and eat a healthy diet.  That way, you will be modeling appropriate behavior for your children.  Consider engaging in family exercise, such as bike rides, swimming, touch football, and the like.  Also, make sure that your family meals are highly nutritious—low in sugar and fat.

By providing a good role model for your children, you will reduce the likelihood that they will suffer from weight-related illnesses.
