Les Rice, the best tattooist in Sydney. Well I think so anyway!
I'd been looking to get a short sleeve on my arm for the past 2 years but had found it hard to find the right tattooist. Of the very few that showed the ability to complete the tattoo in the high standard I expected, none of them showed interest in working on the individual design I wanted. It was basically "Turn up on the day and we'll have a look at it!". This made me feel pretty uneasy as the design is going to be on my arm forever.
Eventually I emailed Paul Braniff who is quite well known in the Australian tattoo scene. He is based on the Gold Coast but as I was having trouble finding the right tattooist, and I had heard such great things about him, I was willing to travel if he could fit me in.
A few weeks after I sent the email I heard back from Paul telling me about Les Rice and how he was just kicking off again in Sydney. You may have heard of the Rice name in tattooing as his father, sister, and brothers are all in the trade.
I would later learn that Les is also an award winning artist, last year winning the world's richest portrait prize, and this being a finalist in the Archibald Prize.
As soon as i made contact with Les I knew he was someone who really cared about each design that he worked on. He gave me some great feedback and within a week of emailing we had the basic design set. I have to say too, if you're not impressed with his drawing ability, then you are very hard to please!
I had my first 3 hour sitting on Wednesday where I got the outline and shading done, and I'll be back in 10 days for the next stage. It's looking awesome so far and can't wait to see it with a bit of colour!

If you are considering a tattoo, especially if it is a portrait or any other form of realism, then I can't recommend Les Rice highly enough. Unfortunately, he does not take walk ins so you'll have to visit his web site, send him an email, and see if you can get in. I didn't have to wait long as he is just setting up in Sydney, but leave it much longer and I'm sure you'll be in for a long wait!
