Over the last two months our researchers have been testing out products available through the internet to find what works and what doesn't. We continue to evaluate products and we'll add to our list of recommendations when appropriate.
So far, we've come up with three products that we are happy to recommend

| Young doctors working too hard - endagering patients? - Monday, 25 May 2009There has been much hand-wringing over the dangers of medical residents' grueling schedules. Doctors-in-training often forgo sleep entirely, racking up as many as 30 work hours in a single stretch. read more ... |
| Cola - worse than bad for you - Wednesday, 20 May 2009If the case against cola/soda drinks wasn't already bad enough, evidence is increasing to suggest that excessive cola consumption can also lead to hypokalaemia, in which the blood potassium levels fall, causing an adverse effect on vital muscle functions." read more ... |

| Jet lag - The Travel's Curse - Wednesday, 13 May 2009
Jet lag is a mismatch between your body's night/day clock and a new day/night cycle in another time zone. Symptoms of jet lag include fatigue, insomnia and restlessness, reduced appetite, constipation, and poor physical coordination and cognitive skills. The severity of your jet lag depends on which direction you flew in and the number of time zones crossed. Getting used to a new time zone typically takes one day for every time zone crossed westward or 1.5 days for every time zone crossed eastward. |
Travelling westward lengthens your day, whereas eastward travel shortens the day. If you're travelling west, researchers suggest, go to sleep one hour later and wake one hour later than usual for the three days prior to travelling. Travelling westward is easier, as the body hasn't lost any hours and can more easily recover.
Eastward travel is harder on your body because it has to shorten its cycle to take into account reduced day time (so people travelling east find it harder to get to sleep at night). When travelling east, you should go to sleep one hour earlier and wake one hour earlier than usual for the three days before travelling.
Interestingly, phototherapy, or ‘intentional exposure or avoidance to bright light before you fly’ doesn't appear to work at all. |
| Health Tip: Drink more water - Sunday, 10 May 2009Water is a key ingredient in keeping your body's internal systems in balance. Dehydration over a long period can have immediate and long lasting effects including: tiredness, constipation, and poor skin quality. While advice differs as to how much water we should actually drink, most people should be consuming no less than 2 litres each and every day! |
| Wrinkle free thanks to... Snakes!?!? - Saturday, 9 May 2009
Skin-care companies including Sonya Dakar, Syence, Borba and Planet Skincare are making skin care crèmes and lotions that contain a synthetic venom called Syn-ake. Representatives from the companies say the products smooth wrinkles by relaxing facial muscles. The logic to the creams is that when poisonous snakes bite, they paralyse their victim by injecting them with a toxin through their fangs. And if snake venom can paralyse muscles, couldn't a targeted version work like a rub on Botox? The answer appears to be, “Yes!” |

| Health Tip - Shopping to be Healthy - Thursday, 7 May 2009
Never do your weekly shopping on an empty stomach. Doing so leads you to be less 'objective' about what you buy, and tends to lead you to make bad or unhealthy purchasing decisions. A great habit to get into is to write lists before you shop - and stick to them when in the supermarket, as well as shopping on a full stomach! |
| Drinking Coffee - Good For You? - Wednesday, 6 May 2009
The Journal of Nutrition has reported research that shows green coffee has chlorogenic acid - which has both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. In addition, it is described as 'highly bioavailable' which means the human body can make use of these benefits quickly.

Free Online Health and The Biggest Loser
As many of you know, the Biggest Loser is a smash television hit. In addition to being a ratings success, the Biggest Loser has also brought attention to the importance of good health through weight control.
Because of this, Free Online Health supports the biggest loser concept, if not for the unrealistic results the contestants achieve, but for the fact it encourages people to get active and get healthy.
Many of you can derive strength and motivation from the Biggest Loser stories. For this reason we provide ample information about Biggest Loser contestants and other people involved with the show. In addition, Free Online Health has been personally involved in the Australian Biggest Loser journey's of Adro Sarnelli and Chris Garling. Free Online Health providing training support for both contestants after they left the biggest loser white house.
Adro Sarnelli
As indicated above, Free Online Health has a strong and lasting relationship with Adro Sarnelli. Free Online Health provided training support to Adro between the period of exiting the Biggest Loser house, and the final weigh in at the Biggest Loser finale.
Adro's strong focus ensured he was always going to be in with a chance at the final weigh in. In the 7 weeks he was out of the white house, Adro went from only being able to run for 3 minutes to being able to complete 10km. This gave him the fitness he required to lose 27kg in 7 weeks, and go on to take the title.
Chris Garling
More recently Free Online Health was also involved with Chris Garling, providing training support and finishing off the fine work done by Shannan Ponton, and 'The Commando' Steve Willis. Chris went on to win the 2007 series giving Free Online Health a second win in as many years!
